Thol is among the top destinations for the twitchers for bird watching as it is also one of the favourite destinations for the migratory birds coming from the cold regions of Eurasia, east Africa, far east Asia, and northern Australia.


It is an artificial lake constructed for irrigation in 1912 on the marshland near Kadi, about 20 km north west of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. It was designated the sanctuary status in 1988 as it had become a habitat for over 150 species of birds including waterbirds and migratory birds that nest and breed in the lake and in the surroundings.


The most prominent species of birds regularly found here are magnificent sāras and flamingoes in thousands. As the lake is surrounded by a greatly varied vegetation, a large number of other birds are also found here, with frequent sights of bluebull, golden jackal, and blackbuck. The white-rumped vulture and common vultures often seen here are rare and critically endangered species. It’s also pleasent and exciting to watch swarms of millions of swarming birds near the sunset times.


It is open to visitors all year round from 6am every day. The last entry is allowed at 5:30 pm and at about 6:00 pm the visitors are asked to leave. A token fees of ₹ 50 is charged from every visitors. A fees of ₹ 200 is payable for a camera. The car entry fees is ₹ 500. The best time to visit the place is November to February.
